Earlier this year Eight Transition Year students took part in the preliminary round of the All Ireland Linguistics competition at the end of January. A competition run jointly by DCU and Trinity College, the contest challenges secondary school students to solve complex puzzles in unfamiliar languages. It aims to inspire students to pursue careers combining computing, linguistics and languages.
This year our Transition Year student, Adam Healy, qualified for the All Ireland Linguistics final which was to be held in DCU on March 11th. As a result of the Covid 19 restrictions, the final round had to take place online. In the Final, held on March 11th, Adam achieved Bronze standard which was an amazing achievement as there were mainly 5th and 6th Years taking part.
BCS has had a long association with this competition thanks to the ongoing commitment of Ms. Kelly. In the past two of our students, Cormac and Declan Manning represented Ireland in the International Linguistics Olympiads held in Stockholm and Pittsburgh. This year’s Olympiad was to be held in Latvia in July 2020 but unfortunately will not now be held.
