Ballincollig Community School first opened on September 14th, 1976 with 109 pupils. In the intervening years over 4,000 pupils have attended here. During this time the school has developed a proud academic and sporting tradition and on the 26th September 2003, Minister for Health and Children, Mr. Michael Martin, TD, opened a new school building with superb new facilities for present and future generations of pupils. Ballincollig Community School has grown with the community. In the early 1970s, Ballincollig was declared a satellite town of Cork and the process of transformation from a small village of less than 1000 people to its present population of 18,000 began. The first school building was innovative in design but, being constructed mainly from fibreglass, had a limited life span and in 2000 a new schoolbuilding was approved to replace it. The Astro-turf pitch - financed by a community draw plus help from partners Belvedere Hockey Club and the Dept. of Sport - was retained and incorporated into the new design. This new building is designed to cater for projected increase in population which will follow the completion of the by-pass and the development of the former Murphy Barracks land directly adjacent to the new building.
